From Chris Boyd:

“This is my client Amber a mid teen welsh pony diagnosed with equine metabolic syndrome which as part of the condition resulted in a attack of laminitis in March 2020.

I initially trimmed her to X-rays and had her in some soft hoof boots but as she started to get more mobile I felt she needed some extra support and protection for her feet as the ground had really started to harden up after a really wet winter .

I opted for the GluShu as amber was still a little sore and she is a bit apprehensive with strangers at the best of times. I felt nailing a shoe onto her sensitive feet would set her back both with her laminitis and with myself in general.

As I wasn’t sure how well she would stand I initially used the fast fix set on a standard 0000 GluShu this allowed me to get her foot back on the ground quickly so I could then fill the tabs with the foot on the floor, this worked well. As I got myself a system in place and she became more comfortable and trusting in me I no longer needed the fast fix but I now felt the shoe was a little bulky and creating a little leverage on the toe laminae towards the end of the shoeing cycle.

I then opted for a 95mm pair of glushu minis and removed the toe tab and altered them to fit on the anvil. This enabled me to set the toes back under the foot a little further and reduce the pressure on the laminae.

Preparation on the foot and having everything ready to go is essential but once you have a planned system in place they are simple enough to do working on your own.

GluShu in this situation have really helped amber on her road to recovery but I feel they are a useful tool to have in the box that could also help horses in many other situations.”
