Owner Review: Glushu for a Thoroughbred with Poor Hooves

Thoroughbreds can be demanding horses to shoe, especially when they are in race training or returning to regular work. Their feet take repeated loading at speed, and any weakness in the hoof wall can make standard nailing or some adhesive applications more difficult.

That was the problem Richard Eubanks faced with a nine-year-old Thoroughbred whose feet had been an issue for about five years. Richard and farrier Efrain Alarcon chose Glushu to solve the horses problems.

From Richard Eubanks:

“This horse is a nine year-old thoroughbred. He has had bad feet for the past five years. I have used regular glue on shoes before and they did not work. I’ve had him in training over the years and his feet had gotten bad and we couldn’t train so we decided to use the GluShu.

I bought the shoes and my farrier Efrain Alarcon fitted them and did a very good job. I had sent the pictures to some farriers in Kentucky who shoe stake horses, and they said it looked like a very good job.

The shoes have been on now about six weeks and are still on nicely. We will pull the shoes off next week and see if we have to reuse the same shoe for the walls on his feet are crumbly.

I had worked the Horse at the Racetrack and I had the fastest time for the distance with these shoes on for three weeks. I will reuse them in the future.”

Richard’s case shows how Glushu can be part of a useful strategy for a Thoroughbred with difficult feet. The horse had a long history of hoof problems, previous glue-on shoes had not worked, and training had been interrupted. After Efrain Alarcon fitted Glushu, the shoes stayed on for about six weeks, and the horse returned to fast racetrack work.
