Why are experts always so complicated when it comes to laminitis (or other problems for that matter)? The reason is that experts do their utmost to improve the chances of success by ruling out what might turn out to be a problem in the healing process, now or in the future. That means they have a protocol in place when horses come in: the patient is checked, a diagnosis made and confirmed.

With laminitis that means X rays/venogramms to assess the severity of the insult. Pain reduction will be administered and initial mechanics are put in place to stop or at least reduce further damage, like cryo-therapy styrofoam, clogs etc.

When horses get more comfortable, new X-rays will verify if the mechanics put in place had the effect we are looking for. Sole growth! If not changes will be discussed, ranging from more mechanics to a deep flexor tendon tenotomy if needed. Also instructions for the farrier at home will be discussed. If he has experience with laminitis it's easy, if not we will explain what he/or she could do and how during the time needed for healing.

On top of that nutritional and medication instructions will be provided. Monitoring is key and with the right help from a veterinarian-farrier team, the sky is the limit like here, where the horse managed to grow a healthy sole in just 8 weeks after being shod with GLUSHU in a full rocker motion set up. Banana style as we tend to call it in Europe. Laminitis, we can not save them all, but we can increase the numbers! #sigronpodiatry
